Initial Sample of Journals
In conceiving of this project in1997, I was aware of a few dozen e-journals, and naively thought I might actually be able to list the universe of such journals, and do a random selection, or even a complete enumertion of the 2 or 3 dozen social science journals then operating.. The explosion of e-journals, however, to an estimated 3000 (of which some 500- 800 would be social science ones) by early 1999, and the continual rapid growth in numbers made this stategy impossible. I resorted to using web-search engines to locate listings, and then followed through connecting links (as indicated in my reference/links sub-page); after doing a cursory visit to some 300 social research journals, I then made a purposive, non-random selection seeking to get a balance with repesentatives from all social research disciplines (history, humanities, cultural studies, geography, urban studies, economics, political science, law, criminology, ethnic studies, regional/development studies, women's studies, education, psychology, and especially sociology and anthropology), geographical areas, coutnries, languages, and attempting to include major, most-well-known journals.
This resulted in selecting 109 journals. Two were in Asian languages (and English), 8 Germanic (and English), 14 Romance, and 85 English. Two were from Asian countries, 11 pacific countries, 5 Latin American, 0 African, 27 European, 15 Canadian, and 50 from the United States. These distributions coincide roughly with the distribution of internet providers and users.
